Das Hinterniss is a sculptural video work for LED wall installation, consisting of a 20 minute static shot framing das hinterniss, ‘the obstacle’, during a horse jump competition.

Thinking through the construction of visual space, the spatialisation of audio video work and the framing of action to hold attention and manipulate anticipation. The video relies on traditions of representing class and animals, particularly the legacy of Stubbs, and the figure without ground of Manet in the construction of individuated subject, assessed according to the competency of their conformity to standard. The performative production of class, and, following on from Berger, the complete appropriation of the animal into the economy of the spectacle.
